Major Climate Change Occurred 5,200 Years Ago: Evidence Suggests That History Could Repeat Itself

Glaciologist Lonnie Thompson worries that he may have found clues that show history repeating itself, and if he is right, the result could have important implications to modern society. Thompson has spent his career trekking to the far corners of the world to find remote ice fields and then bring back cores drilled from their centers. Within those cores are the records of ancient climate from across the globe.

Richard L. Meehan of Stanford university is doing intensive researches on the phenomena that happened around 3200 BC. Some of them from his report are shown below.
a. Sulfate concentration in Greenland ice core shows a huge spike at 3200 BC.
b. Atmospheric methane in Greenland ice core shows the lowest value at 3200 BC followed by abrupt increase.
c. Dead Sea levels peak, which is 300 feet higher than today, in 3200 BC.
d. Oxygen isotope in Greenland ice core shows big freeze-up in 3000 BC.
e. Belfast oak tree ring chronology peaks about 3150 BC, suggesting major climate event.
f. Heavy flooding in Navajo country, the American Southwest, based on paleoflooding studies. The peak at 5K yrs BP.
